Just learned about 14 year old Chental-Song Bembry. She's the author of the children's book "The Honey Bunch Kids."This 64-page book was published in 2010. It took her nearly three years to write and illustrate her first book! The three characters in the book are in middle school and meet each other on the first day of classes after they miss the school bus. Have a look at this video of the author and some of her readers. While on YouTube, I stumbled onto this 2:19 minute HowCast video titled "How to Tell a Ghost Story." The 5 or 6 points the narrator gives are marvelous. Actually, the points will work for "How to Write a Kid's Picture Book," too! Enjoy!

How children's books evolved - Slide Show

If you have a moment, view the Slate online magazine slide show on the history of American children's book illustrations, based on Timothy G. Young's book, Drawn To Enchant. The slide show does mention African American illustrators and books, including the 1982 book, Jake and Honeybunch Go to Heaven by Margot Zemach.
Thanks to the blog 100 Scope Notes for the lead!
