While organizing papers in my office, I came across Volume 1, Number 1 issue of "Children of the Sun: African American Children's Literature Newsletter" published in Fall 2003/Winter 2004 by the Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture - Smithsonian. The first issue was developed by Joanna Banks, Education Specialist at the Anacostia Museum, Shauna Collier, Smithsonian Librarian, and Pearline Waldrop, designer. Washington, DC artist Julee Dickerson Thompson provided illustrations for the newsletter. This issue included an article about Eloise Greenfield.
I'm not sure if the Smithsonian continued to publish this newsletter - sure hope so! Does your local library offer a newsletter on African American kid's lit?
